Extending Employment Insurance for Sick Workers

Canadians who are suffering from serious illness and cannot report to work should be able to access EI benefits to help them through a difficult time.

The current EI sickness benefit only covers 15 weeks. Over 1/3 of Canadians who access the benefit aren’t ready to return to work by the time the benefit runs out.

Daniel’s Bill C-212 would address this problem by extending the EI sickness benefit to 50 weeks; an idea that the House of Commons endorsed in principle on February 19, 2020.
